Flipping the Classroom: Gestational Diabetes

UVLe is down!!! So I am posting this here for my students.

Pre-meeting

1. Read about “Gestational Diabetes” in Harrison’s.

2. Watch Gayle in “Pregnant with Gestational Diabetes” at http://youtu.be/BguNb3lMIos.

The video raises the following questions. Take down notes from the references indicated to answer these questions.

  • How was she diagnosed to have gestational diabetes? Read p. 29 of the summary of the Philippines Unite for Diabetes Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Diabetes (Part 1: Screening & Diagnosis). Compare this with the American Diabetes Association Standards of Medical Care p. S15-S16.
  • When should insulin be started? Read p. S174 of the 2013 Canadian Diabetes Association Clinical Practice Guidelines for the prevention and management of diabetes.
  • How is gestational diabetes managed during labor and delivery? View slide deck entitled “Diabetes in Pregnancy” at http://www.slideshare.net/isiptan/diabetes-in-pregnancy-2543217 particularly slides 37-38. Read p. S175 of the 2013 Canadian Diabetes Association Clinical Practice Guidelines for the prevention and management of diabetes.

Meeting

  1. There will be an individual quiz with 12 questions. Time limit is 30 minutes.
  2. The same quiz will be answered as a team. The team is allowed 30 minutes to submit their final answers to the quiz.
  3. The teacher will run through the questions and discuss answers with the teams.
